The first annual Grier Laughlin Memorial Tournament, April 2-3, 2011, was a success. The Denver Post wrote a piece about the tournament, which can be read here. More information about Laughlin and the tournament can be found in my previous post, “Colorado Water Polo Honors Coach Grier Laughlin with Memorial Tournament.”
13 teams participated in the tournament, ranging from master’s teams and women’s college teams to youth teams and scrimmages for children ages 8-13.
Grier Laughlin’s wife and his children came to the tournament on Saturday evening. That evening several special awards and presentations were given. USA Water Polo honored Laughlin’s work and influence in Colorado Water Polo with a plaque. Several groups sent money for the Grier Laughlin Memorial Fund. This included a $2,500 donation from Sports Authority and a $500 donation from a club team in California. In total the memorial fund received $4,500 in donations.
Laughlin’s players both past and present collected and combined their photos to create a scrap-book of their memories of being coached by Laughlin. They presented this scrap-book to Laughlin’s wife and children as a gift.
