The New Mexico High School Water Polo League has announced this season’s teams, their coaches, practice times, and the locations of their practices. Practice begins March 7, 2011.
The following graphic lists the breakdowns of information.
Some of the high school teams are not large enough to have a full squad on their own, and so are combined with other high school teams. This results in rather entertaining team mascots. Several of the combos are the same as last year, including Albuquerque High School and Highland High School, who called themselves the “Horndogs” last year, much to the chagrin of many of the parents.
Fees for the Season
The New Mexico High School Water Polo League requires each player to pay a $100 fee. This is needed to pay for pool time, referees, coaches, and end-of-the-season rewards. Before joining the team and being allowed to practice, all players must also register with USA Water Polo. There is a $25 fee, and the registration can be completed online, here. On the site, look for “NEW MEXICO HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO LEAGUE 2011.”
All games except for the State Tournament will be played at Highland Pool. Athletes will need to be ready to be at the pool from 7:00 am until 12-noon Saturday and Sunday March 26-27, April 2-3, April 9-10, and April 16-17. The plan is for the first games to begin at about 8 a.m. This is a tentative schedule, however, and is subject to change, with two weeks prior notice. The State Tournament will be held at West Mesa Aquatic Center April 29-May 1.
There will be a parent meeting March 1, 2011 at West Mesa Aquatic Center at 5:30pm. If you have other questions, Janet Lyon-Huffman, the League Coordinator, can be contacted at 505-249-7725 or at JLyonhuff@msn.com.
